Founder of Indian Nurserymen Association
Shri Arjan Dass Agarwal (1922 – 2011)

There are very few people who dedicate their entire life to the cause of society. Late Shri Arjan Dass Agarwal ji was undoubtedly one of them who played a marvelous role in uniting the indian nurserymen across the country for the holistic growth of the nursery industry.

Visionary thinking and untiring and dedicated efforts of Shri Dass paved the way for the formation of the Indian Nurserymen Association in 1987. Since when he became the Founding President of INA, he was assisted by late Shri Madan Gopal, his eldest son and Founding General Secretary of the INA.

The Indian Nurserymen Association has been a platform for reciprocal thinking, innovations to be incorporated, genuine problem solving ideas and making strategies for the progressive growth of the nursery industry in the country.

Sh. Arjan Dass born in the family of Shri Mangat Rai a land lord and Banker on 14th November 1922 at Kaithal. He was the youngest among three brothers and four sisters. He completed his schooling from Kaithal. Though, he had great desire for higher studies, external factors led him to leave school after the 9 th standard. He then joined the family business. For some personal reasons of his own, he could not continue in the business and preferred to take care of the agricultural lands. He was techno-savvy from his childhood days and used his awareness and knowledge in the raising of crops. He also nurtured a great hobby of reading books and newspapers and stayed in touch with the agricultural university in pursuance of latest techniques which he could implement in the 40 acres of land that his family owned. Owing to his innovative thinking, he rough the diversification to the traditional farming and earmarked 50 percent of the total area for development of garden with various fruit plants, 25 percent for nursery and floriculture, and the remaining 25 percent for routine crops. This great devotion to the field of nursery led him to visit The Netherlands twice and he introduced the latest varieties of Gladioli. He also introduced Rosa Damascene for the first time in Kaithal domain and processed the rose flowers at his own farm.

He had passion for travelling and toured nearly every corner of the country. Where ever he went he visited the nurseries of the area. His expertise earned name in Haryana as well as other states in horticulture. He had great interest for publication. His elder son Madan Gopal joined him in the nursery business just after his matriculation.
